Letter: Troops need a break from Bush
Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2005 | 9:02 a.m.
I see that our fearless leader has again left Washington for another vacation. This time it's 33 days in Crawford, Texas -- his longest stretch yet. Working stiffs can only dream of such a break after five years.
Hey, you say, the job is stressful and he needs a break to clear the cobwebs and get refreshed. Never mind the fact that he lied and exaggerated the facts in getting us into war with the wrong county. Just think, if all of our forces and firepower had been concentrated in the right direction, we might have actually caught Osama bin Laden. Notice how Bush never talks about him or weapons of mass destruction anymore. Now it's all about democracy.
Those yellow ribbons that instruct us to support our troops are irritating to me as an American, especially when they are plastered on a gigantic, gas-guzzling vehicle. It goes without saying that all citizens of this country support our troops, but I sure don't support this president. Remember, words and slogans are cheap. The question for people is: What have they really done to support our troops today?
Bush likes to say things like "Bring 'em on" and "fight them over there so we don't have to fight them here." I submit to you a dead troop is just as dead in the streets of Baghdad as he would be in New Jersey.
