BLM to hold public meeting on oil, gas leasing

Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2005 | 9:41 a.m.

The Bureau of Land Management's Elko field office will have a public meeting later this month to discuss environmental impacts of future oil and gas leasing in northeastern Nevada.

The agency is preparing an environmental assessment of oil and gas leasing and its potential impacts on public lands in the state.

"There is increased interest in Nevada for oil and gas exploration and development, partly because of the recent discovery of new oil reserves in western Utah and because of the continuing rise in the price of crude oil in the world," said Clint Oke, assistant field manager in the Elko office.

The next lease auction is scheduled for December 2005 in Reno.

The meeting will give people an opportunity to get more information about oil and gas leases and voice concerns that they may have. The meeting is scheduled for 4 p.m. Aug. 22 in the BLM field office in Elko, 3900 E. Idaho St. People can also submit questions or comments by calling the Elko office at (775) 753-0200.
