DES MOINES, Iowa -- Nate Frese contributed three hits and two RBIs, leading Iowa to a 6-5 win against Las Vegas on Tuesday at Principal Park.
The 28-year-old shortstop stroked an RBI double and scored on a single by James Hoffpauir in the second inning to give the Cubs a 2-0 lead. Frese doubled and scored twice, delivering the decisive run-scoring single in the seventh.
Todd Wellemeyer (3-2) shut out the 51s through five but surrendered a solo homer to Jayson Werth in the sixth. The 26-year-old right-hander yielded three runs on four hits, walking two and fanning four over six innings.
In the seventh, Delwyn Young singled and scored on an error by Frese, while Willy Aybar hit an RBI single. A two-out, two-run blast by Jason Grabowski in the eighth brought Las Vegas within a run.
The 51s threatened in the ninth, loading the bases with two outs, but Jermaine Van Buren got Young to ground out and picked up his 21st save.
Las Vegas starter Scott Erickson (0-2) took the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits with three walks and four strikeouts over 5 1/3 frames.
Iowa is riding a three-game winning streak, while Las Vegas has dropped four in a row.
