Greenville set to build downtown convention center

GREENVILLE, Miss. -- City officials have signed off on an agreement for the construction of a downtown convention center.

Last year, the Mississippi Gaming Commission approved the Delta Blues Casino complex, which includes a 120-room hotel, the 30,000-square-foot convention center and a nine-acre water park.

The site for the $30 million casino is on 55 acres, which was once the site of a defunct mill.

Greenville presently has two casinos, the Lighthouse Point Riverboat and Jubilee.

The Greenville City Council voted 5-1 in a special meeting Thursday to accept an agreement in which Delta Blues Casino will own and operate the convention center for two years. The city will assume ownership after the two years and Delta Blues will continue to operate it for another five years. The city will become full owner and operator in seven years.
