Letter: Those who don’t register car plates must contribute

WEEKEND EDITION

August 6-7, 2005

Congratulations are in order to Sheriff Bill Young on his success with the new sales tax. We look forward to the benefits from the upgrade and additions in our law enforcement force over the next several years. These benefits will be a direct result of the sheriff's dedicated work.

In addition to the small sales tax increase, I would have suggested a couple of additional public safety funding methods. I would propose a surtax of 20 percent on all traffic court fines allocated solely for police work. The other would be an annual $40 vehicle user tax for those folks who like to live in Nevada, but keep their car registered in another state. Even the "snowbirds" would be included. These folks use our roads and make demands on our infrastructure without paying their way with auto registration fees. I am getting fed up with seeing vehicles in residential neighborhoods with out-of-state plates.
