Letter: Religion doesn’t belong in science
Friday, Aug. 5, 2005 | 9:10 a.m.
So President Bush thinks "intelligent design" should be taught in the classroom alongside evolution. One has to wonder if he is again pandering to the radical right-wing religious groups that got him elected or if he is just ignorant of science. Based on his previous stands on Yucca Mountain, global warming and stem cell research, I suspect that it is the latter.
Evolution is firmly based on sound science while intelligent design is only thinly veiled creationism, in other words, religion. Discussions of religion might be appropriate in philosophy or sociology classes, but certainly not in science classes.
Not only is intelligent design not science, but it simply doesn't make sense. As someone who teaches college-level human pathophysiology, I am well aware of the many hundreds of things that can go wrong with the human body. Everyone experiences some disease process at some time. If there had been a designer, it certainly could not have been very intelligent.
