Nephew of Royals' manager killed in Iraq

Lance Cpl. Timothy Michael Bell Jr., a nephew of Kansas City Royals manager Buddy Bell, was among the 14 Marines killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq.

There was a moment of silence before the Royals played the Red Sox at Fenway Park.

Fourteen members of an Ohio Marine battalion were killed, two days after five other Marines assigned to the battalion were killed while on sniper duty in Iraq.

No. 4 seed loses at Acura Classic

Unseeded Sania Mirza of India stunned No. 4 Nadia Petrova 6-2, 6-1 at the Acura Classic, which has lost two of its top three players in two days from an already-depleted field in Carlsbad, Calif.

Mashona Washington defeated No. 8 Vera Zvonareva 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. With Lisa Raymond losing earlier in the day, Washington is the only remaining American in the field. Four Russian players advanced to the third round from the original 11 who entered the event.

No. 7 seed Kim Clijsters of Belgium cruised into the third round with a 6-3, 6-1 win against Poland's Marta Domachowska in the featured night match.

The 2002 tournament champion recorded 11 aces and overcame a second set in which he fell behind 3-0, rebounding to win the match in 1 hour, 41 minutes.

Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand, the 13th seed, defeated Paul Goldstein 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. Srichaphan will meet Wesley Moodie of South Africa in the third round.

French teenager Gael Monfils defeated Juan Monaco of Argentina 6-4, 7-6 (5) to reach his first quarterfinals this year. He'll face Victor Hanescu of Romania, who ousted 2002 French Open champion Albert Costa 6-3, 6-4.

Zidane returns

Zinedine Zidane is coming out of international retirement to help France qualify for the 2006 World Cup.

The 33-year-old Real Madrid midfielder, a brilliant playmaker who helped France win the 1998 World Cup and 2000 European Championship titles, retired from international soccer after last summer's European Championships in Portugal

He will start his comeback in an Aug. 17 exhibition against Ivory Coast and is available for crucial World Cup qualifiers beginning in September. Zidane has 93 international appearances and has scored 26 goals for France.
