Glitch blamed in failure to mail license-renewal notices

CARSON CITY -- The state Department of Taxation acknowledged Wednesday that a glitch stopped it from mailing out an estimated 11,000 business license renewal notices for two months.

Department Director Chuck Chinnock said those who did not receive their notices will not be assessed any late payment penalty. And the renewal notices should start going out next week.

The problem stems from the department's shift to a new computer system, but it was not a technical glitch per se, Chinnock said. The problem was human error: Directions were not given to the computer to mail out the notices.

The department said businesses could send in their $100 checks for the annual licenses with a note indicating their license number, the name of the business and the renewal period. The department also recommends that taxpayers write their business license numbers on their checks.
