Editorial: Resort not appropriate
Thursday, Aug. 4, 2005 | 9:22 a.m.
A Utah company has proposed building a five-story resort in the Mount Charleston area, near Lee Canyon. The 100-unit resort would feature video gaming, a nightclub, a restaurant and cabins on 29 acres near State Route 156 and Deer Creek Highway, which are really just two-lane, already overburdened roads winding through a sparsely populated forest. The proposal comes six months after a Mount Charleston "summit meeting" among top state and federal officials concerned about existing overuse of this recreational area.
The summit was a precursor to a long-range plan for Mount Charleston, which we hope will stress the importance of preservation. We're not opposed to development at Mount Charleston, but we believe this proposal should be rejected. It would radically change the character of this quiet, natural place that for decades has served as a respite from Las Vegas-style entertainment.
