EPA to fine builder $80,000 for violations

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said Tuesday that it will fine KB Home Nevada Inc. $80,000 for violations of the Clean Water Act, closing a case that began last year.
The EPA had accused KB Home of clearing land and filling tributaries of the Las Vegas Wash without a permit at its Huntington subdivision site, west of Fort Apache Road in the southwest valley.
In September 2004, the EPA ordered KB Home -- the valley's largest home builder -- to cease work on the subdivision. In October KB Home agreed to spend $193,000 on wetlands restoration projects in the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. With that initial settlement, work on the subdivision was allowed to resume.
EPA spokeswoman Lisa Fasano said the subsequent fine, which will be finalized after a 30-day public comment period expires, will close the case.
KB Home officials could not be reached for comment.
