Metro Police arrested three people after the trio allegedly robbed the Dealer's Choice Bar at 4552 Spring Mountain Road, its bartender and two patrons about 1:30 a.m. Saturday.

Alvares and Martinez were booked into Clark County Detention Center and the 17-year-old was booked into the Clark County Juvenile Hall.

One of the suspects allegedly jumped on the counter of the bar with a handgun while another was armed with a knife. The third suspect remained in the doorway and acted as a lookout, according to Metro Police.

Supreme Court denies petition

The Nevada Supreme Court has denied the petition of killer Jonathan C. Daniels, sentenced to life in prison without parole for shooting two convenience store clerks during a robbery in Las Vegas.

The court said Friday that Daniels, now 30 years old, waited too long to file his petition for a writ of habeas corpus.

A jury in December 1995 found Daniels guilty of killing Nicasio Dias and June Frye. The two were shot at the AM/PM market where they worked in January 1995.

Five killed in California wreck

A van carrying at least 16 people overturned on the shoulder of a desert highway near Ludlow, Calif., early today, killing five and injuring 11, the California Highway Patrol said.

It was not immediately known whether another vehicle was involved or what caused the crash, said CHP officer Todd Weichers. It occurred around 5 a.m. on Highway 40 in San Bernardino County.

"The details are sketchy because things are chaotic out there," Weichers said. "All I know is the van overturned on the right shoulder for unknown reasons."

Westbound lanes of the highway were temporarily shut down as four helicopters airlifted 11 people to hospitals, he said. The victims' identities were not immediately available. Weichers said he did not know the extent of the victims' injuries.
