Tiger Direct sues over Mac software name

Apple Computer Inc., the maker of Macintosh computers, was sued by Systemax Inc.'s Tiger Direct over the use of the name "Tiger" on Apple's operating system software that is scheduled for release today.

Tiger Direct, which sells computers and related products on the Internet, said the use of the name threatens to lessen the value of its trademark. The company also accused Apple of deceptive and unfair trade practices in the lawsuit, filed Thursday in federal court in Miami.

If the court grants Tiger Direct's request for an injunction, Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple's rollout of the new product could be stopped.

Apple spokesman Steve Dowling said the company doesn't comment on pending litigation.
