Input is sought on superintendent search

Clark County School District staff plan to put out within the next two weeks a request for proposals from individuals or organizations interested in coordinating the search for Superintendent Carlos Garcia's replacement.

Joyce Haldeman, executive director of community and government relations for the district, said she is gathering input from School Board members as to their preferences for the size and scope of the search. At a School Board meeting April 14, Garcia announced he was resigning to become vice president of urban markets for education publishing giant McGraw-Hill Cos. His resignation takes effect July 13.

At a meeting last week the School Board approved naming Walt Rulffes, deputy superintendent of operations, and Agustin Orci, deput superintendent of instruction, as dual interim superintendents following Garcia's departure. Rulffes was given the authority to hire and fire employees as well as sign legal documents.

A discussion of additional compensation for Rulffes and Orci was put off Thursday due to the absence of the district's senior legal counsel, Bil Hoffman. The School Board will determine pay increases to accompany the additional responsibilities assigned to the dual interim superintendents at a meeting next month.

The School Board has not yet decided whether it will seek candidates in a national search or how much funding will be allocated for the process.
