Flutie could be signed by Giants

Jeremy Shockey finally showed up at the Giants' off-season workouts Thursday, but his return was trumped by the surprise appearance of another intriguing visitor: quarterback Doug Flutie.

Flutie, 42, who was released last month after four seasons with the San Diego Chargers, came to Giants Stadium to meet with team officials and take a physical. General Manager Ernie Accorsi described the visit as a routine part of the Giants' evaluation of available players.

It was unclear if Flutie and the team were actively involved in negotiations. His agent, Kristen Kuliga, confirmed Flutie's visit but declined to comment beyond that.

It is difficult to gauge the level of the Giants' interest. Although the quarterbacks behind Eli Manning on the depth chart are solid, there is still room to upgrade.

Jim Miller, a 12-year NFL journeyman, and Jesse Palmer, the fifth-year player who has started just three games in his career, are each vying to back up Manning next season.

Green was arrested Monday night when deputies responded to the call from his home. Green, cited for disorderly conduct, posted $150 bond and was released. A court hearing was scheduled for May 11.

A police report released Thursday said a woman was heard yelling "help me" before the line went dead, and when officers arrived, they found a woman sitting in a vehicle, crying.

The woman, identified by Green as his wife, Heather, took her 4-year-old son and left.

She told officers that during a discussion, her husband became upset and told her to get out, punching the bed with his fist and yelling into her face. She said she went to her son's room and Green hit the door with his hand.

At that point, she said, she called 911, only to have Green hang up the phone.

No one was injured in the incident.

Owens, the flamboyant All-Pro wide receiver, likely will skip the team's minicamp this weekend because he wants a new contract just 13 months after signing a seven-year deal worth almost $49 million.

Pro Bowl running back Brian Westbrook and defensive tackle Corey Simon also aren't expected to show up for the practices because of contract disputes. Pro Bowl left tackle Tra Thomas will sit out because of a blood clot in his leg. Quarterback Donovan McNabb will miss the last two days to attend the annual White House Correspondents Association dinner.

The Jets released the veteran kicker Thursday, five days after they picked Ohio State All-American Mike Nugent in the second round of the NFL draft. Brien missed field goals from 47 and 43 yards in the final 2 minutes of regulation of a 20-17 overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the playoffs, sealing his fate with the team.

White and other undrafted rookies will join the drafted players in a minicamp this weekend. White, who has not signed a contract, will be given a chance to show what he can do.

After the draft last Sunday, Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil and general manager Carl Peterson appeared to disagree on White's potential. "Carl felt the kid deserved a chance to work in a rookie camp so we brought him in," Vermeil said Thursday.

The seven-year veteran started 14 games for Minnesota last season, totaling 71 tackles and 3 1/2 sacks.

"We know what Todd can do and we want to look at the guys we have here," general manger Marty Hurney said, referring to offseason signees Steve Cheek and Tom Rouen.

The Rams also signed fourth-round pick Jerome Carter, a safety from Florida State, to a three-year deal.
