Fishing report: It’s all about cats and bass

NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE

LAKE MEAD: Fishing has been good and appears to be getting even better as both shore anglers and boaters are reeling in striped bass and channel catfish in the Boulder Basin and Overton Arm.

Several boaters have reported that they have taken limits of 20 stripers in recent days while fishing from Las Vegas Wash to Government Wash. Shad are being netted in Las Vegas Wash for use as bait.

Stripers and catfish are still being caught near the tires at Lake Mead Marina. Many of the anglers are fishing only for catfish.

A few stripers have been caught near the closed launch ramp at Las Vegas Wash. Fishing has been fairly slow around Hemenway Harbor.

Anglers continue to catch stripers behind Fish Island in the Overton Arm. This is the time of year that stripers are normally found at the Meadows and the Meat Hole, also in the Overton Arm. Boaters fishing above Overton Beach Marina are catching catfish.

LAKE MOHAVE: Rainbow trout fishing has been unpredictable following the weekly plants taking place at Willow Beach. Some weeks the fishing has been excellent while others have resulted in very little action. This week's plant was planned for today. Stripers are starting to show just beyond the narrows above Cottonwood.

KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA: Unsettled weather brought snow flurries and 7 inches of snow that made fishing difficult this past week. Anglers were rewarded with a few rainbow trout that measured 17 inches, but most fish ranged from stocker size to 14 inches.

EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR: Anglers continued to have success for the recently stocked rainbow trout. The fish are averaging 11 inches. The water is still murky from the snowmelt.

ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR: Fishing pressure dropped off from the previous week, but those anglers who fished took a few recently stocked rainbow trout. The fish averaged 11 inches. The reservoir is at full capacity.

URBAN PONDS: Fishing has slowed for both catfish and rainbow trout. Ivy Santee, NDOW angler education coordinator, said that the fishing should start picking up for sunfish and bluegill. One angler reported having good luck while fly-fishing for bluegill in the main pond at Floyd Lamb State Park.
