Letter: Weekly pickup of trash insufficient

Garbage stinks, and so does Republic Services' proposal to collect it just once a week instead of the current twice a week.

And as for its recycling proposal, let the president of Republic Services and the company's top executives open a 95-gallon container after it has baked in our summer heat of more than 100 degrees. How are elderly people supposed to move a loaded 95-gallon container to the curb?

The county gave Republic an out on recycling -- it only has to pick up from single-family homes, not apartment complexes.

I live in an apartment complex. The recycling bins were always full, but Republic picked them up only when it felt like it. Then they were discontinued altogether. Republic felt they were not cost effective. The company would rather use up our landfill than recycle.

Republic, which has a no-bid contract until 2035, is looking for a small neighborhood to test once-a-week pickup. Why don't the Republic executives test it at their homes and let the public know what it smells like after a week.
