CARSON CITY -- A political science professor from the Community College of Southern Nevada and a former state employee from Reno were honored Wednesday for their work of increasing voter education and participation.
Professor Mark Peplowski and Larry Struve of Reno received the first biennial Jean Ford Democracy Awards. The ceremony took place in conjunction with a legislative resolution declaring April 27 as Democracy Day in Nevada.
Peplowski has been a professor at the community college in Henderson since 2000 and was named Teacher of the Year in 2003 by the Henderson Chamber of Commerce. Peplowski was cited for his "dramatic and profound impact" on students in teaching history, sociology, race relations and politcal science.
Struve was director of the state Department of Commerce and former chief deputy attorney general. He was a member of the Nevada Commission on the Bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution. He is now representing the Religious Alliance in Nevada at the Legislature.
The award is named after the late Jean Ford from Las Vegas who served both in the Assembly and Senate and who worked to establish the Nevada Women's History Project.
