Merger talks confirmed

Monday, April 25, 2005 | 9:44 a.m.

Two days after saying they wouldn't comment on market rumors about a merger with US Airways, representatives of America West Airlines confirmed the company is in negotiations.

"In response to various inquiries and numerous speculative articles by the press, America West Airlines today confirmed that it is currently in discussions with US Airways regarding a potential merger," the company said in a statement released Friday afternoon.

"The company emphasized that there is no assurance that the discussions will lead to a definitive agreement," the statement said. "America West does not intend to make any further announcements until a definitive agreement is reached or discussions are terminated."

America West is the No. 2 commercial passenger carrier at McCarran International Airport, while US Airways ranks No. 10 there. On a nationwide basis, a merger would create the sixth largest airline.
