Car stolen with 1-year-old inside

A carjacker stole a woman's car with her 1-year-old girl strapped in a car seat this morning, North Las Vegas Police said.

Officers were called to the 2100 block of Ellis Street about 12:30 a.m. The victim, a 22-year-old woman, reported that her car and wallet were stolen by a man, who pushed her down before driving off in her car, Officer Tim Bedwell, police spokesman, said. Inside the car was her toddler daughter.

All available officers began combing the area, and at 1:07 a.m. the car was found abandoned in the 1900 block of Statz Street, a half-mile away from where it was stolen. The girl was unharmed, Bedwell said.

Officers questioned a 22-year-old man but released him. The investigation is continuing.

Man dies after crashing into tree

A 65-year-old man who was pronounced dead after he drove his 1995 Toyota pickup into a tree Thursday afternoon may have suffered a heart attack before the crash, Metro Police said.

The man, whose name had not been released this morning, was westbound on Lake Mead Boulevard near Springfield Street when his truck struck the north curb and went up onto the raised shoulder then hit a tree, police said. A witness told police the truck had been weaving prior to leaving the road.

Man killed in crash identified

A man killed in a single-vehicle wreck early Thursday has been identified as 20-year-old Michael Macaraeg of Las Vegas.

Metro Police said he was heading east on Sahara Avenue near Sloan Lane in a 2004 Acura RXS when he lost control going around a curve and hit a block wall.

Macaraeg was pronounced dead at the scene. Excessive speed appears to have been a factor in the crash, police said.

$28 million OK'd for state security

The Nevada Homeland Security Commission on Thursday approved $28 million in funds to be distributed across Nevada this year.

About $8.4 million of the funds are slated to go to Clark County as part of the Urban Area Security Initiative, officials said.

The remaining $19.6 million will be divided up and distributed throughout the state according to a population-based formula. Clark County, the most populous county, is expecting to receive about 70 percent of those funds.

Help sought in robbery

Metro Police Tourist Safety Unit is asking the public's assistance in identifying a robbery suspect who was caught on videotape following elderly men.

The suspect, a black man in his mid 30s, is wanted for five strong-arm robberies in the downtown Las Vegas area, police said.

The assailant then leaves the area through casino doors or stairs.

Police said the man is 5-foot, 11-inches tall, weighs 220 pounds and was last seen wearing a blue hooded jacket or dark flannel jacket, light colored blue jeans and white sneakers.

Anyone with information about these robberies is urged to call Metro's Tourist Safety Unit at 229-3204, or, to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 385-5555.

Water authority approves offices

The Southern Nevada Water Authority usually works out of the agency's office in Las Vegas at Valley View and Charleston boulevards. Soon, however, the regional water supplier will have offices about 250 miles north.

The water authority board Thursday approved renting offices in Ely, in White Pine County. White Pine County is one of several northern counties from which the water authority hopes to bring groundwater to Las Vegas. A series of hearings are scheduled next week on the issue in Ely and other towns of central Nevada.

The annual cost would be $9,600 for about 2,000 square feet of office and visitor space in Ely.

Manzanares was listed in critical condition and Gallegos was in serious condition at University Medical Center this morning.
