Letter: Bigger trash cans a very bad idea

I think the proposal for supplying larger containers and for picking up trash just once a week "stinks"! Five years ago, when my family and I were living there, San Diego switched to these containers. They were supposed to be a good idea. They (the containers) did not fit into the garages with the cars so you had to keep them in the back yard. They did not fit through most backyard gates, so you had to wheel them back through your garage to get them outside, thus, you had to move your car outside to get your trash outside. Where will homes with no yards, and narrow garages, keep these monstrosities?

Furthermore, when these big garbage cans are full, they are impossible to move. So what if they have wheels? It is like trying to move a 300-pound man, who is drunk, to the curb. And for those who are pregnant, small, weak or old, this will be impossible.

I must point out, also, that San Diego has much milder temperatures and the trash stinks and gets worse as you open and close it. In the summer the smell was almost intolerable.

Can you imagine what your can and your yard will smell like as you wait for a once-a-week pickup in the midst of a Las Vegas spring or summer? I don't want to imagine. After we moved to Las Vegas in 2002, it was a great relief for us to have twice-a-week trash pickup.

It's a really bad idea, but if there must be a move to the big containers, keep the trash pickup to twice a week.
