Assistance League Day scheduled

At 10 a.m. Friday Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman will proclaim Friday as Assistance League Day during a ceremony at the group's office and clothing warehouse, 6446 W. Charleston Blvd.

The presentation will include school children picking out and receiving new clothing.

The Clark County School District identifies students in need of clothing and transports them to the Assistance League building where each child is given a winter coat, a backpack, two shirts, two pairs of pants, six pairs of socks, six pairs of underwear and a pair of tennis shoes. All of the clothing is new.

The mayor is scheduled to be joined at the proclamation presentation by Henderson Mayor Jim Gibson, North Las Vegas Mayor Mike Montandon and Clark County Commission Chairman Rory Reid.

Call 229-2205 for more information.

Equestrian AIDS event on tap

The Equestrian AIDS Foundation will hold its second Las Vegas Benefit beginning at 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Hard Rock Hotel.

The foundation is devoted to helping men, women, and children in the equestrian community who are struggling anonymously with HIV/AIDS and trying to live their lives with hope, dignity, and the special joy that only horses can bring.

There will be performances by Ben Harper, Avion and Jenna Darlleen.

The event is sponsored by Karin Reid Offield and Monarch International's Show Circuit. Call 323-822-2000.

Plantings to help enliven senior center

"Help Us Bloom," an event in which seniors will plant new flowers and other plants to help spruce up the center, will be 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday at the Derfelt Senior Center in Lorenzi Park.

The Junior League of Las Vegas project will include turning over flower beds; cleaning out a stream that run through the center; cleaning barbecue grills; decorating trash receptacles; and general pickup of trash, weeds, leaves and other debris from the senior center and other areas of Lorenzi Park.

The Senior Center received its own Las Vegas grant to be used to purchase plants for their beautification project. However, their grant will not be enough to cover all of the plants they need, and it does not cover any of the clean-up tasks that need to occur to prepare the center for the new blooms.

The beneficiaries of the event are the seniors at the center and anyone from the general public who visits the park and happens to visit or see the senior center. The clean-up project is meant to help restore some of the original beauty of the senior center. Call 822-8536.
