As part of a plan to better market the community, Boulder City has won approval of its own speciality license plate emblazoned with Hoover Dam.
Last year, the Boulder City Chamber of Commerce applied to the Legislative Commission on Special License Plates to create a Hoover Dam plate.
The plate will be available May 23 through the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Proceeds from the sale of the plates will be used to bring tourists into Boulder City, said Jill Lagan, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce.
The Boulder City Tourism Commission has already secured $100,000 to market the city to out-of-state tourists and Las Vegas area residents.
The plates will be available in Boulder City prior to the May 23 release date, Lagan said. The chamber will hold a silent auction on May 7 for those who want one of the first 200 plates produced by the state.
In 2002, the Legislature limited the state to only 25 speciality plates, which not only commemorate an area or cause but also raise money for the cause, including tourism.
The chamber obtained signatures of 1,500 vehicle owners who supported the effort and said they would be interested in paying the fees to get the plates.
The Hoover Dam plate costs $61 and the chamber gets $30 of that. The chamber would also get $20 from every $25 renewal of the plates.
