Fishing report: Open water is where the stripers are found

Friday, April 15, 2005 | 9:52 a.m.

NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE

Boaters have had fairly good luck this week for striped bass that they are catching at around 50-60 feet with anchovies. The fish are being found between the mouth of Government Wash and Las Vegas Wash in the morning hours.

Shore fishing has been poor for stripers in the Boulder Basin, which is typical for this time of year. Stripers are in schools in open water and will not come close to shore until they scatter after their spawn.

Nevada Department of Wildlife creel census clerks saw a pair of 4 1/2-pound largemouth bass that were caught over the weekend around St. Thomas. The fish were taken with a top water lure.

High winds and poor fishing were found over the weekend at Cottonwood Cove.

John Hutchings, NDOW Fisheries Biologist, said recent surveys of the reservoirs showed more holdover trout in Haymeadow Reservoir and more largemouth bass in Cold Springs Reservoir.
