Book signings

Barnes & Noble, 8915 W. Charleston Blvd., will host the following events this week:

1 p.m. Saturday -- Author Raymond Clanton will sign copies of his book, "Fire, Fear and Guts: Memories of a B-29 Flyer."

7:30 p.m. Tuesday -- "World Poker Tour" spokesman and commentator Mike Sexton will sign copies of his book, "Shuffle Up and Deal: The Ultimate No Limit Texas Hold 'Em Guide."

6 p.m. Thursday -- Woman to Woman Book Club.

Spring reading

UNLV's Department of English presents Chinese-American poet and San Diego State University professor Marilyn Chin at 7:30 p.m. today at UNLV's Marjorie Barrick Museum Auditorium as part of the International MFA program's annual Spring Reading Series. 895-3101.

Outdoor Olympics

The North Las Vegas Library, 2300 Civic Center Drive, will host an outdoor olympics at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Admission is free. 633-1070.

Highland games

The Las Vegas Celtic Society presents the 2005 Las Vegas Celtic Gathering and Highland Games on Saturday and Sunday at Floyd Lamb State Park. Admission is $10 general, $8 seniors and children and free to children under 12. 378-0294.

Health care expo

The Las Vegas Senior Center, 451 E. Bonanza Road, will sponsor a free senior health care expo from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday. 229-6454.

Spring carnival

The Henderson Chamber of Commerce's annual spring carnival will begin at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Fiesta Henderson Casino & Hotel, 777 W. Lake Mead Parkway. All-day passes are $18. 565-8951 or www.hendersonchamber.com.

Celebration

The District at Green Valley Ranch will host the following activities and performances on Saturday in celebration of its first anniversary:

Noon to 3 p.m. -- Meet and greet with SpongeBob SquarePants.

Noon to 5 p.m. -- Street entertainment featuring balloon artists, a stilt walker and juggler.

1 p.m.to 9 p.m. -- Street performers.

3 p.m. to 9 p.m. -- Concert by The Fab, a Beatles tribute band.

Karaoke night

Las Vegas presents a karaoke night from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Gibson Community School, 3990 W. Washington Ave. Fee is $5 to sing, but free for spectators. 229-5096.

Movie in the park

Las Vegas presents the movie "Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken" at 6:30 p.m. today at Cimarron Rose Community Center, 5591 N. Cimarron Road. Admission is free. 229-1607.

Las Vegas presents a free community appreciation days at the following locations Saturday:

Abraham Lincoln

Poets' corner

Keith Brantley and Pendelita Toney will host a poets' corner for established poets and open-mike participants at 7:30 p.m. today at the West Las Vegas Arts Center, 947 W. Lake Mead Blvd. Admission is free. 229-4800.

Family festival

Las Vegas presents a family festival from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at Sunny Springs Park, at the intersection of Golden Talon Avenue and Buffalo Drive. Activities include music, gymastics and dance. Admission is free. 229-1087.

Tolkien celebration

The Paseo Verde Library, 280 S. Green Valley Parkway, will sponsor the following events this week as part of its J.R.R. Tolkien celebration and tribute. All events are free. 492-6593:

7 p.m. Monday -- "Tolkien Revealed," a lecture featuring Tolkien expert Dr. Brad Eden.

9 a.m. Saturday -- Back-to-back-to-back screenings of "The Fellowship of the Ring," "The Two Towers" and "The Return of the King."

'Reading Las Vegas'

The following events will be held this week to recognize "Reading Las Vegas," a month-long free reading program for adults ages 18 and older. All events are free:
