City Council denies zone change for proposed casino

Friday, April 15, 2005 | 9:22 a.m.

RENO -- The Reno City Council has denied a master plan and zoning change to allow a proposed a hotel and casino in southwest Reno.

Monarch Casino & Resort Inc., the parent company of the Atlantis Casino & Resort, had proposed a 201-suit hotel and casino and spa to cater to golf and mountain sport enthusiasts wanting easy access up the Mount Rose Highway.

The council heard six hours of testimony before voting 6-1 late Wednesday to reject the changes sought by the casino company.

Most opposition came from neighbors and parents and students at Bishop Manogue High School, who argued a casino less than 1,000 feet from the school was inappropriate.
