Syndey Alford, Allison Ishkanian and Barbara Lee are this year's recipients of the District I Clubs of the Sierra Nevada Region of Soroptimist International of the Americas' Violet Richardson Award.
The award program recognizes and honors young women who make the community and world a better place through volunteer efforts. The program was named for Violet Richardson, the president of the first Soroptimist club in 1921.
Alford, a 17-year-old senior at Foothills High School, was honored for her volunteer work with Students Against Destructive Decisions -- and Teens Against Tobacco Use. Ishkanian, an 18-year-old senior at Bonanza High School, was recognized for volunteer work through her high school's National Honor Society. Lee, a 16-year-old junior at Durango High School, was honored for her work with Students Taking Action to Terminate Unlawful Substances.
Each of the three received $125, and $125 was donated in each teen's name to their volunteer organization.
