Two men killed by trains

A man was killed early this morning after he was struck by a train at a southwest railroad crossing, Metro Police said.

The man, whose name and age were not released this morning, walked onto the Union Pacific Railroad tracks near Arden and Blue Diamond roads about 12:25 a.m. and turned to face the oncoming train, Sgt. Chris Jones, a Metro spokesman, said.

The engineer was unable to stop the train before striking and killing the man, Jones said.

It was unclear this morning whether the man intentionally walked onto the tracks, although the fact that he turned to face the train indicated he may have wanted to be struck, Jones said.

"It's difficult to tell at this point," he said. "But it appears that if a person steps onto a track and faces the train, one can only deduce it is intentional."

Meanwhile a railroad crew Friday morning found another man near a track roughly 10 miles north of Jean, Jones said.

Few details were available about the death of Gregory John Lampe, 26, who was found about 11 a.m. Friday off a frontage road near the tracks. He was believed to have also been struck by an oncoming train, Jones said.

Metro Police and the Union Pacific Police Department are investigating the deaths, Jones said.
