Odds against sports teams surviving in Atlantic City

Monday, April 11, 2005 | 9:27 a.m.

ATLANTIC CITY -- It's tough to be a sports franchise in a casino town.

That's what the owners of several Atlantic City-based teams are finding out.

The Boardwalk Bullies, a minor league ice hockey team, wrapped up their East Coast Hockey League season at Boardwalk Hall Friday night. Now they're moving to California. Growing financial losses and a shrinking fan base forced the team from AC to sunny Stockton, Calif., for the 2005-06 season.

Other Atlantic City teams have had similar woes.

The Atlantic City CardSharks are on a one-year hiatus after finishing their first year in the National Indoor Football League with a trip to the playoffs, but averaging fewer than 2,100 fans.
