Editorial: Voters, where were you?

Thursday, April 7, 2005 | 9:43 a.m.

In the general election last November, 77.4 percent of the registered voters in Nevada turned out. There was hope that such enthusiasm during a presidential election year could be sustained, and that local elections would benefit.

Unfortunately, the municipal primary elections in Southern Nevada on Tuesday dashed that hope. Only 7.65 percent of the cities' registered voters showed up at the polls. Winning their races outright were Henderson Mayor Jim Gibson and Las Vegas Municipal Judge Cedric Kerns. Imagine, such important offices being decided by so few voters.

Frankly, the turnout on Tuesday was pathetic. There are still races to be decided in the general election on June 7 -- for North Las Vegas mayor, for municipal judge seats in Henderson and North Las Vegas and for the Ward 6 City Council seat in Las Vegas. We hope voters gain a lot more motivation between now and then.
