Man killed in ambulance collision

A collision involving an ambulance killed a person Friday afternoon in Spring Valley, Metro Police said.

Henry Warren, 58, was making a left turn off southbound Rainbow Boulevard onto Spring Valley Parkway about 4:40 p.m. and failed to yield to an oncoming American Medical Response ambulance, police said.

The ambulance had been traveling to an emergency call with its lights and sirens on, Officer Jose Montoya, a Metro spokesman, said.

The ambulance collided with Warren's Nissan sedan, killing him at the scene, police said.

Ambulance driver Jennifer Massey, 21, and paramedic Jennifer Gilgallon, 32, both suffered moderate injuries, police said. The ambulance was not carrying a patient, Montoya said.

Stray bullet kills man in NLV

A 47-year-old North Las Vegas man was killed Wednesday night by a stray bullet in the 2500 block of Englestad Street near Carey Avenue and Commerce Street, police said.

The victim, Maurice Tyler, was taken to University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

It appears Tyler was not the target of the shooting, Officer Tim Bedwell, police spokesman, said. Witnesses reported that two groups of men were exchanging gunfire about a block from where he was shot and police believe one of their bullets hit Tyler. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 385-5555.

The child killed Thursday when, according to Metro Police, her mother accidentally backed over her has been identified as 2-year-old Rylie Kidd of Las Vegas.

Police said her mother was leaving the family's apartment in the St. Croix complex, 6661 Silverstream Ave. near U.S. 95 and Rainbow Boulevard, without realizing her daughter was behind the family's minivan.

Police said they do not expect to file criminal charges in connection with the incident.

Inmate who hanged himself identified

The inmate who hanged himself at High Desert State Prison on Thursday was 41-year-old Michael Carney, Nevada Department of Corrections officials said.

Carney, who was serving one to three years for a burglary conviction, had been denied parole on March 24.

Carney would have been eligible for parole again on July 23, according to prison records.

High Desert State Prison has been the scene of one other suicide in the past nine months, officials said.

Pablo Palacious, 49, was found dead, apparently from suicide, on July 23 at the prison, according to previous news reports. Palacious was serving four consecutive terms of five to 16 years for two counts of attempted murder with a deadly weapon.

He had apparently committed suicide by hanging himself with a T-shirt, officials said.
