Letter: High school fees are out of line

Monday, Sept. 13, 2004 | 9:02 a.m.

I have children enrolled in the Clark County School District, and one of them just entered high school. I was shocked at the list of fees this high school expects me and other families to pay for various courses chosen by their children.

For a student to take an art class, for example, the student's parents are assessed $50. For auto mechanics, it's $25. Another $50 for ceramics. A commercial design course requires $40. Dance is $55. Orchestra is $20. A food and nutrition class costs $40. Then there is a $5 locker fee, and a $20 fee for a physical education uniform. Guitar lessons require a $20 fee.

Whatever happened to public schools being public? Perhaps the high schools should become known as semi-private. When I was young, schools were indeed public. These fees are out of line.
