Computer class offered at library

The North Las Vegas Library, 2300 Civic Center Drive, in cooperation with the PC User Group, will present "How to Buy a Computer," a class from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in the library's conference room.

Learn what kind of computer is right for you, what components and software you will need, how to make sure you're getting a good deal, and about warranties and services.

Child safety fair scheduled Saturday

The Volunteer Center of Southern Nevada and One Day's Pay, in cooperation with the Good Knights, Nevada Youth Alliance, Labor of Love Productions, and the Society for Creative Anachronism will present the Child Safety Mini Renaissance Fair from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday at Monaco Middle School, 1870 N. Lamont St.

The fair will bring the message of safety to children in a way that is fun for kids. The program will feature a medieval-style encampment, with period players from the local chapter of the Society for Creative Anachronism providing demonstrations of arts and crafts traditional skills, and martial arts from the period of the Middle Ages to the Renaissance.

The fair will also be a one-stop information center, featuring around 20 agencies concerned with the safety of the children.

The program features guest speakers and appearances by local celebrities and the youth based acting troupe, Labor of Love, who will be presenting one-act plays intermittently throughout the day.

Food and drink will be provided from noon to 3 p.m.

Walk for Hope will aid cancer research

City of Hope will begin its Walk for Hope to Cure Breast Cancer, an annual leisure walk and stroller roll with registration at 7 a.m. Saturday at Sunset Park, located at the corner of Sunset Road and Eastern Avenue.

The walk will raise money to support life-saving breast cancer research, treatment and education programs at City of Hope Cancer Center.

Participants raise donations by using sponsor forms and asking family, friends and co-workers to sponsor their walk. The minimum pre-registration donation is $25 for adults and $15 for children; day-of-event registration donation is $30 for adults and $20 for children.

Lecture to focus on films in China

As part of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas fall 2004 lecture series, "Underground Film Making in China" will be the first topic of the lecture at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the auditorium of the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History.

During the lecture, Paul Pickowicz, professor of history at the University of California, San Diego, will provide an analysis of underground documentary and feature films in China. He will discuss topics not treated in Chinese state-run film productions, including gay sexuality, prostitution, drug addiction, and poor migrant laborers. Call 895-4961.
