Vols will wait to name QB
Friday, Sept. 3, 2004 | 9:35 a.m.
Tennessee head coach Phil Fulmer decided to wait until today to name his starting quarterback for Sunday night's game even though reports from Knoxville have Brent Schaeffer taking most of the reps with the first-team offense this week.
Schaeffer and fellow true freshman Erik Ainge were named co-No. 1's by Fullmer last week. Schaeffer is considered the much better runner of the two.
"I think they both understand they're going to play," Fulmer said. "I don't have any preconceived ideas that the guy that starts in the game is going to be the guy that finishes or starts the next game. ... I think that's going to be important to let it play out."
Players must be on the bus for the airport at 5:30 a.m.
But it looks like the storm won't hit Tennessee until Monday night at the earliest. Forecasts for Knoxville on Sunday are for sunny skies with a high of 86 and humidity of 71 percent.
The school said it expects a crowd "in excess of 107,000" for the game. Neyland Stadium's listed capacity is 104,079.
