School counselor recommends kids for camp

WEEKEND EDITION

September 4 - 7, 2004

A school counselor at Richard J. Rundle Elementary School wrote about several students who deserved a chance to go to camp but whose families could not afford to send them.

One boy, she said, has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and is small for his age.

"He is often teased because of it," she writes, but "he did well in group and responds well to the positive atmosphere."

A girl has juvenile diabetes and "wants to make friends and feel included in a camping group."

Another girl "has had many changes in her life this year within her family, an illness, a death and a divorce," but she still "always shows caring and concern for others even if they hurt her feelings.

The counselor asked for help to send each of the children to summer camp.

The Sun Camp Fund provides scholarships to send children to camp when their families cannot afford to. All donations go directly to the cost of camp; administrative expenses are paid by the Las Vegas Sun.
