Letter: Kubler-Ross was hospice pioneer

The hospice community lost a guiding light with the recent death of Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, a pioneer in the field of death, dying and bereavement and who was a strong hospice supporter.

Her efforts, through her book in 1969, "On Death and Dying," helped pave the way for hospice and a greater understanding and awakening in how we, in this country, address death and dying.

No longer the taboo subject, hospice has made inroads in educating doctors and lay persons on end-of-life care and directives in life-limiting situations.

While saddened at her loss, her contributions to the field of hospice will live on through the ever-growing understanding of the hospice philosophy.

Nathan Adelson Hospice, a not-for-profit hospice, is grateful for such a pioneering spirit as is embodied in her work. In her memory, we would like to thank all in the community who recognize the gift of hospice work and the comfort it has brought to so many.

SUSAN DRONGOWSKI Editor's note: Susan Drongowski is the chief executive officer of the Nathan Adelson Hospice in Las Vegas.
