Intersection where child was killed gets safety upgrade

The North Las Vegas intersection where an 8-year-old girl on a bicycle collided with a car and later died is more pedestrian friendly now.

The city put a reflective yellowish-green sign in the middle of the road and will put some small traffic islands around the intersection of Craig Creek Avenue and Revere Street in the near future, city officials said.

Mayor Michael Montandon said when driving down the road, it almost looks like there is a stop sign at the intersection, which is near a small park.

"By the time you're on it, you're going 5 or 10 miles an hour so it works very well," Montandon said.

Justyne Steffee was riding her bicycle home from a friend's house on May 5 when she collided with a car being driven by Kimberly Bunch.

Steffee was in a coma until she died on May 19 at University Medical Center.

Bunch pleaded not guilty in July to driving under the influence of a controlled substance and/or prohibited substance causing death or substantial bodily harm. The case is scheduled to go to trial on Jan. 18.
