Fishing report: Striped bass are still the big news

NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE

LAKE MEAD: Striped bass fishing continues to be very good for boaters and shore anglers in the Boulder Basin while largemouth bass are being caught in the Overton Arm, according to the Nevada Department of Wildlife.

For the past two weeks shore anglers have been enjoying periods when the fishing has been very good for stripers around Hemenway Harbor and Special Events Beach. Anglers have told NDOW that some days the stripers are in that area while other days the fish are nowhere to be seen.

Boaters are having more consistent success as they have been finding fish about 200 yards off Special Events Beach and are working Sassy Shad and Pencil Popper lures on and near the lake's surface to catch the fish. Jigging and drifting with anchovies have been working as well in that area.

Stripers that have been caught during the past week in the Vegas Wash Arm have been ranging from less than a pound to 2 pounds.

Channel catfish are being caught with anchovies near the tires at Lake Mead Marina and along Special Events Beach.

NDOW checked anglers over the weekend at Echo Bay Marina who had caught largemouth bass around the islands in front of the marina.

Striped bass fishing was very good over the weekend for shore anglers and boaters around Stewart's Point. Boaters also have been faring well for stripers at Ann Margaret Cove.

LAKE MOHAVE: Excellent fishing took place last Friday following the rainbow trout plant at Willow Beach. Fish that ranged from 10 to 11 inches were caught with PowerBait and small spinners. An angler who was casting a Panther Martin lure had very good luck for the planter trout.

Fishing remains fair for the few boaters who have been trying their luck for striped bass around Cottonwood Cove. Fish that weigh about a pound are being caught with anchovies at a depth of 65 feet in the narrows above Cottonwood.

EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR: Pete Gill of Nevada State Parks said that the week started with anglers having success but fishing slowed later in the week. Boaters fared better than shore anglers, but anglers fishing from the dam and dock did catch fish. Several anglers caught their limit of five rainbow trout. The fish averaged 11 inches and preferred live worms to PowerBait. A few brown trout were also taken.

ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR: Despite low water levels and mossy conditions, anglers fishing from shore landed a few rainbow trout and hand-size crappie. Fishing pressure has been low.

WAYNE E. KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA: Anglers continued to experience success for rainbow trout at both Haymeadow and Cold Springs reservoirs. A few fish that measured 16 inches were creeled, but the majority averaged 14 inches. A few largemouth were also taken.

Dacey and Adams-McGill reservoirs are open for fishing and a few anglers reported moderate success for largemouth bass at the upper end of Dacey.

Anglers should be aware that weeds are becoming a problem on all reservoirs, but they are all still fishable from the shore.

The weather has been moderate with the highs in the mid 80s and the lows in the lower 40s.

URBAN PONDS: Anglers reported moderate success for channel catfish at the ponds at Lorenzi Park, Floyd Lamb State Park, and Sunset Park in Las Vegas and Veterans Memorial Park in Boulder City. The fish were taken with an assortment of baits.
