CARSON CITY -- A life-size statue of Indian crusader Sarah Winnemucca will sit in the state Ccapitol as well as the U.S. Capitol, first lady Dema Guinn said.
Artist Benjamin Victor of Aberdeen, S.D., is completing the first statue of Winnemucca, which will be placed in the Capitol's National Statuary Hall in Washington.
When finished, the clay sculpture will be transported to a foundry, where it will be bronzed before heading to Washington for installation next spring.
Dema Guinn led a fund-raising effort that collected more than $150,000 to pay for the statue. She says there is enough money for a second statue to be placed in the state Capitol. At present there are busts of the Chris Schaller, chief of staff to two governors, and of Guy Shipler, a long-time newspaper columnist.
