Spanish Springs running back Mike Kanellis ran for a state-record 537 yards as the Cougars defeated South Tahoe 56-37 Thursday in Reno.
According to the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association, the record had belonged to Mountain View Christian School's Shedrick McClenton. He ran for 492 yards against Lake Mead Christian Academy in a 1A, eight-man game in 2002 in Las Vegas.
The 4A record had been set by Bonanza's Robert Thomas when he ran for 409 yards in 1996 against Silverado. Thomas totaled 536 total yards, a 4A record that was also broken by Kanellis.
Two 1A players had games with more total yards -- Coleville, Calif.'s Matt Carter had 546 yards in 2000 against McDermitt, and Lake Mead's Chad Bolton had 607 yards in 2002 against Mountain View.
