LANSING, Mich. -- Five Republican state lawmakers came out in favor of Proposal 1 on Wednesday, saying voters should have a voice in whether gambling is expanded in Michigan.
The lawmakers sought to counter Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm's claim the proposal would hurt the state lottery and funding for public education. The measure is on the Tuesday's general election ballot.
Granholm has been in radio and television ads with Republican House Speaker Rick Johnson saying Proposal 1 threatens lottery profits, which help fund public schools. She has visited school districts with Lottery Commissioner Gary Peters to spread the same the message, including stops in Rockford and Madison Heights this week.
