Holiday closings

Sunday will mark the 140th anniversary of Nevada's Oct. 31, 1864, admission to the Union. Since 2000 Nevada Day has been observed on the last Friday of the month for the purpose of having a three-day weekend. Here's what's open and closed Friday:
Safety: Police and fire emergency services as usual. Administrative offices closed.
Utilities: Open: Sprint, Southwest Gas, Nevada Power, Cox Communications cable TV. Closed: Las Vegas Valley Water District.
Government: Closed: Las Vegas, Henderson, Boulder City, North Las Vegas, Clark County, courts, state offices. Open: Federal offices, federal courthouse.
Schools: Closed, no classes: Clark County public schools, Community College of Southern Nevada, UNLV.
Mail: Open, deliveries as usual: U.S. Postal Service, United Parcel Service.
Newspaper: Sun afternoon editions published as usual. Sun offices open.
Transit: Downtown Transportation Center: Open. City Ride natural gas buses: Holiday schedule (one less vehicle in operation). Citizen Area Transit: Public buses on regular schedule.
Libraries: Closed: Las Vegas-Clark County District, Henderson District, North Las Vegas District, Boulder City District.
Garbage: Republic Services pickups as usual.
Matrimony: Marriage License Bureau open 24 hours, starting 8 a.m. Friday, closing midnight Sunday.
Financial: Brokerage firms open; Banks: Up to individual financial institutions whether they will open Friday, so check your local branches. Nevada law allows banks to open on holidays as long as they post all transactions to the next regular banking day.
Parking: City metered parking spaces are free.
