Hispanics registering in higher numbers than others

Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2004 | 9:39 a.m.

A group working to get the Hispanic community registered to vote and out to the polls issued a report Tuesday that Hispanics have registered in higher numbers than the overall population in recent weeks.

The report, "Latino Voters in Clark County," comes from Voices for Working Families. It is based mainly on the last names of registered voters.

Since the Aug. 17 primary elections, the report said, the number of Hispanics registered to vote is up to 76,565, or 11.2 percent of the total electorate, from 62,131, or 10.7 percent.

The numbers are "a reflection of the amount of attention placed on the Latino community," said Andres Ramirez, state director of the group.

The report also shows that most Hispanic voters live in Clark County -- 34,009 -- with Las Vegas second at 24,953.

It says the average age of the Hispanic voter is 41.5 years old, while the average age of the voter in the general population is 47.3 years old -- almost six years difference.

Fifty-five percent of Hispanics register as Democrats, while 26 percent register as Republicans, the report said.
