Five Bishop Gorman golfers shot below 87 to lead the Gaels to a 24-stroke win against Galena to claim the NIAA 4A state golf championship Thursday at the D'Andrea Golf Club in Sparks.
Battling temperatures in the 30s and a course none of the southern teams had seen, Gorman's In-Bee Park shot a 6-under 65 to take state medalist honors.
"It was a little chilly to begin with but once the sun came out, it was nice golfing weather," Gorman coach Kelsey McCall said.
"It was really draining mentally, the first day we got shut out at one course, taken across town, we started them out, played for an hour and a half -- stop, start, the indecision was mentally draining."
The tournament was scheduled to start Wednesday at Reno's ArrowCreek Country Club, but the course was above the freeze level and snow forced a move to Sparks.
Silverado, the next highest southern team, was third with a 487. Both Sunrise Region medalist Alex Gibson from Coronado and Sunset Region medalist Mackenzie Mack from Cimarron-Memorial, shot 79s on the par 71 course.
Led by strong doubles play, Reno High School edged Coronado 25-20. The Huskies advanced to play Palo Verde in today's state championship in Reno.Palo Verde defeated Galena 31-14.
Palo Verde also advanced to the boys' final, beating Reno 32-13. The Panthers' boys were to face Galena, which beat Basic 25-20.
