Book festival
The following events are planned today as part of the 2004 Vegas Valley Book Festival. All events are free. 895-1878:

Senior Activities
The City of Las Vegas' Derfelt Senior Citizens Center will host a free Senior Activities Day at 9 a.m. Wednesday at 3343 W. Washington Ave. Admission is free, and activities include horseshoes, bocce, croquet, disc golf and golf putting. 229-6601.
Family storytime
The North Las Vegas Library, 2300 Civic Center Drive, will host a free family storytime at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Admission is free. 633-1070.
Newt Gingrich
Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich will sign his book, "Grant Comes East: A Novel of the Civil War," at noon Saturday at Barnes & Noble, 8915 W. Charleston Blvd. Admission is free. 242-1987.
'Las Vegas Affair'
The Las Vegas Chapter of Brandeis University National Women's Committee will host "The Las Vegas Affair," featuring local authors Joseph Badal, Jean Scott and Jon Ralston, at 11 a.m. Sunday at the Orleans Hotel. Admission is $45, and reservations are required. 649-2200.
Edwin Black
Author Edwin Black will speak at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Temple Beth Sholom, 10700 Havenwood Lane. Admission is free, but reservations are required. 794-0090.
Health care expo
The Las Vegas Senior Center, 451 E. Bonanza Road, will host a free Senior Health Care Expo from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. today. Services includes glaucoma and cataract screening, dental and oral cancer checks and hearing and vision testing. 229-6454.
Lecture
Author and political commentator Dinesh D'Souza will give a free lecture, "Islam & the West: A Clash of Civilizations?" at 10 a.m. Saturday at UNLV's Richard Tam Alumni Center. Admission is free. 895-0490.
'Polkapalooza'
"Polkapalooza," two days of polka music and dancing featuring 14-time Grammy Award-winning Jimmy Sturr and his orchestra, will be held from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Stardust Resort and Casino. Admission is $15.
'Yesterday'
The Clark County Museum will host "Destination Yesterday" from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at 1830 S. Boulder Highway. Admission is $1.50 adults, $1 seniors/children, and activities include a hands-on laundry, quilt tying, rope-making and live music. 455-7955.
'Wine Affair'
The Suncoast Hotel and Casino and Lite 100.5 FM will host the "2004 Wine Affair to Benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation" from 7 to 10 p.m. Thursday at the Suncoast. Tickets are $30, and $10 from each ticket goes toward breast cancer research. 636-7075.
'Guantanamera'
The Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive, will present the 1993 movie "Cronos" at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Admission is $3. The film is not rated. 455-7340.
'One Community'
The movie "Fahrenheit 451" will be shown at the following library this week, as part of the monthlong program, "One Community, One Book," sponsored by the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District. Free.
