Colorado developer backs out of casino project

D'IBERVILLE, Miss. -- A Colorado company has dropped plans to develop a casino resort in D'Iberville.
Jacobs Entertainment Inc. officials notified the city Wednesday of its decision. D'Iberville officials had been debating whether to give Jacobs millions of dollars in tax incentives the developer had requested to pay for road improvements and other infrastructure.
The privately owned casino site just west of the Interstate 110 bridge is served by a narrow road without direct access to the highway.
The company said in a prepared statement it had chosen to redirect its efforts to acquiring casinos instead of developing them from the ground up. Jacobs also said it plans to expand video gambling at truck stops in Louisiana and off-track wagering in Virginia, where the company owns a horse racing track.
"I'm not looking at this as a setback," said Mayor Rusty Quave. "I'm looking at this as a stepping stone among many we've had over the last 10 years."
