Yum Brands’ Lewis named chief executive

Monday, Oct. 18, 2004 | 9:28 a.m.

Kmart Holding Corp., whose shares have tripled this year, named Yum Brands Inc. executive Aylwin Lewis as president and chief executive, replacing Julian Day, to improve retail operations.

The appointment is effective immediately, the No. 3 U.S. discount retailer said today in a news release. Lewis, who spent 13 years at Yum, was most recently president, and chief multibranding and operating officer.

Chairman Edward Lampert, whose investment firm owns more than half the company's stock, is trying to boost the retailer's same-store sales, which fell 15 percent in the second quarter. Lewis, who at Yum helped oversee Long John's Silver to Pizza Hut restaurants, will focus on marketing, analyst Richard Hastings said.
