New trial date set in Bobbitt’s domestic case

Friday, Oct. 15, 2004 | 9:09 a.m.

John Wayne Bobbitt walked out of court Thursday with a new date for his trial on domestic violence charges.

When he stepped out of the building, two bail bondsmen put handcuffs on him and dragged him off, claiming he did not pay off his bail.

By the afternoon, he was free again, and said the incident was a misunderstanding. He paid the bondsmen $1,100, he said, the remaining balance of the 15 percent he paid on the initial $20,000 bond.

The charges stem from a scuffle between Bobbitt and his stepson in August. Bobbitt's wife, Joanna Ferrell, was allegedly knocked down during the fight. She had filed for a divorce on Aug. 27, but she said Thursday she wanted to give Bobbitt another chance and move on with their lives.

Bobbitt is charged with two counts of domestic battery. The next status check on the case is set for Oct. 18, but the trial won't take place until December at the earliest. The trial was postponed because the stepson is currently with his father and would not be available as a witness until December.

Ferrell said that her son, who is 6 feet tall, is very protective of her. She said he was the one who introduced Bobbitt to her.
