SENATE DISTRICT 3

Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004 | 1:04 a.m.

In Senate District 3, incumbent Democrat Valerie Wiener faces Republican Leo Davenport in her bid for a third term in Carson City.

Wiener was re-elected with 62.3 percent of the vote four years ago. Also, the district, which encompasses the area around the Rainbow curve on U.S. 95 and its neighborhoods north and east, has about 7,300 more registered Democrats than Republicans.

Wiener, 55, is president and chief executive of Wiener Communications Group and PowerMark Publishing. She is focusing on issues that have been at the forefront of her work in the Legislature: juvenile justice, health care and consumer protection.

On health care, Wiener's focus has been on fitness and nutrition, especially for children.

Wiener said her current consumer protection efforts primarily take aim at identify theft through efforts to increase security and reporting to individuals when their personal information may have been compromised.

Davenport, 52, is a small-business owner, whose campaign issues include education and health care.

Davenport said the state must do something to rein in rising health care costs and health insurance premiums.
