SCHOOL BOARD DISTRICT E

Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004 | 2:03 a.m.

Of the four Clark County School Board incumbents up for re-election, Denise Brodsky won the primary with the largest margin of victory. But that doesn't mean she's taking the November general election for granted.

"I'm going to keep doing the job I was elected to do four years ago," said Brodsky, who finished with nearly 60 percent of the vote. "I'm going to look out for kids and teachers and make sure our schools get the resources they need and deserve."

Brodsky, 45, said she's proud of her work on the board, particularly her successful push to set new limits on junk-food sales to students and a 100 percent ban on tobacco products on district property.

Mortgage broker Ryan Devins, 29, has made himself a visible -- and critical -- presence at School Board meetings over the past year. He has challenged the purchase of a new sport-utility vehicle for Superintendent Carlos Garcia and questioned board members' travel expenses.

Devins was part of a slate of four candidates -- one running in each race -- who pledged to overhaul the district's management style and replace Garcia if elected. Only one other candidate from the slate -- Isaac Farrell in District A, who is running against incumbent Mary Beth Scow -- joins Devins on the November ballot.

"I'm going to ask the tough questions, and I don't care if that makes people mad," said Devins, the father of two children. "There's been zero accountability and too much rubber-stamping."

Brodsky has picked up the support of one of the challengers, retired substitute teacher Frank Albano, who finished third in the primary with 16.8 percent of the vote.
