SCHOOL BOARD DISTRICT C
Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004 | 2:03 a.m.
Incumbent and veteran educator Shirley Barber held off five challengers for the Clark County School Board's District C seat and will face off against attorney Richard Segerblom.
"When I walk the district, I see so many familiar faces," said Barber, who is seeking her third term. "It's a very comforting feeling to know the people you represent."
Barber, 69, spent more than 30 years in public education and has been inducted into the district's Hall of Fame. She has argued -- unsuccessfully -- for more limits on the superintendent's powers.
Segerblom, chairman of the state's Democratic Party from 1990 to 1994, is a graduate of Boulder City High School and the father of two School District graduates.
Segerblom, 56, said the School Board's biweekly meetings should be televised to increase the public's awareness of the pressing issues. He would also push to conduct the superintendent's performance evaluations in public rather than the closed-door setting currently used.
